The Woman at the Well
The Story of Rapha Well
The Hebrew word “Rapha” (רָפָא) means to heal, restore, or make whole. It conveys the idea of bringing something broken back to its intended state of health and completeness. In the Bible, this word is closely associated with one of God’s covenant names, Jehovah Rapha (יְהוָה רָפָא), meaning “The Lord Who Heals.” This name first appears in Exodus 15:26, where God reveals Himself to the Israelites as their healer, promising to protect them from disease if they follow His ways. Thus, Jehovah Rapha expresses God’s divine power to heal not only physical illness, but also emotional wounds, spiritual brokenness, and the deeper needs of the human soul.

In the Gospel of John, chapter 4, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well on His way from Judea to northern Galilee and asks her for a drink. Surprised that a Jewish man would speak to her, she questions Him, and Jesus replies, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water” (John 4:10). When the woman wonders how He could draw such water, Jesus explains, “Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13–14). The woman then says, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty” (John 4:15).
In this passage, Jesus reveals that His gift is living water, symbolizing eternal life through the Holy Spirit. He demonstrates divine knowledge of her life, gently confronting her past while offering grace instead of judgment. Amazed, the woman recognizes Him as the Messiah. She runs to tell her community, and many Samaritans come to believe in Jesus because of her testimony.
Only in His presence do we find true refreshment. Through this encounter, Jesus makes Himself known as the wellspring of eternal life, offering living water that refreshes the spirit and satisfies the deepest yearnings of the soul — a gift that never runs dry.
